TaxisPosted: November 8, 2011
Taxis are a Huge. Deal. here. Regulation of them, fares, etc. Lots of controversy.
But I hope that we are all in agreement on one thing, which is that no one ever walks down the street and suddenly decides “oh heck, why don’t I just take a cab” simply because one drives by. Why do cabs drive around honking to let you know that they are there in case you forgot you wanted a cab until it honked at you?
This is a question that has puzzled me for the eight years that I’ve lived here. I’ve basically resigned myself to the fact that it will continue to happen, however irrationally and however annoyingly. (If you know me, you’ll know that I never really resign myself to anything I find annoying.)
Today, however, I saw and heard something that made this practice seem almost rational in comparison. Guy is running. Running. Exercise. Dressed in running clothes. And a cab? Honks. Multiple times. While driving slowly past. Because the guy who is out for his morning run is going to say “you know what? I wanted to get exercise but here’s this cab, so maybe I’ll just take it home.” Really?
