Today’s question of minimal consequence:

Why do we say “Native Hawaiian” but “Alaska Native”? (See, e.g. 20 U.S.C. s 7265e.)

    Alaska native makes me think I someone born in that state, not necessarily one of its indigenous people. Native Hawaiin, like Narive American, connotes a heritage that predates colonization by Europe.
